There was an expectant hush, and Duke looked around. He saw a group of people standing on a high stage, all wearing black robes. And then a precentor stepped forward and the choir began to sing. Duke had never heard anything quite like it before. He had heard wandering minstrels sing, and when the farmers got together for threshing wheat or other group activities they would often break into song. But this was polished, and each note sounded clearly before the harmonies twined together and created a sound that was more like the complex melodies played on a lute than the full bodied chant sung by the men of Pfuff.
