What would you do if you walked into church some Sunday morning and found that there was no pastor and no substitute? Further, what would you do if somehow you ended up being the person people were looking to for a solution?
Does being ready to always give an answer include being prepared to preach a sermon?
I'm not sure. I've never thought about it much because there was always someone else to look at and expect an answer... But I've rather assumed that 1 Peter 3:15-16 applied more to a casual setting than a Sunday gathering, and that 2 Timothy 4:2 was addressed specifically to a pastor rather than a layman.
For the record, I am now confident of being able to 'run' a structured service as performed in our church. However, for the message we used a series of devotionals by Billy Graham (I had nothing to do with this part) and relied on poking the congregation to share something God had done in their lives that week.
But I still want to know if I should be prepared to do better in the future. After all, I'm spending time considering trying to recreate a sermon on short notice from sermon notes I've taken in the past...
