The annual "What do I think about what I read last year" post!

I could talk about books for hours, you know, given the right questions ) )

meltintall3: (Default)
How this works: Comment with your favorite color and I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better. Update your journal with the answers to the questions. Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions

meme from [livejournal.com profile] aravisautarkeia & [livejournal.com profile] ladyadeone

aravis_autarkeia asked:
1. If you could own any movie costume that is midnight blue or hunter green, what costume would you pick?
Hmmmmm. I think I'd really like Eowyn's funeral gown. (Which has an added bonus of being very like a dark green gown...) But other than that, there isn't much that springs to mind in that color range.

2. Who is your favorite character in The Lord of the Rings?
Samwise Gamgee, Faramir, ...everyone... But that is sort of like cheating and giving an easy answer. So! I find Sam's steadfast determination and level-headedness and uncomplaining spirit to be a breath of fresh air when supporting characters often are just there for comic relief and snark. (I like snark as much as everyone else but there aren't enough Sam characters!) Same with Faramir--he has an uncompromising stand-up-for-what-he-believes attitude and he's honorable and unselfish and keeps his word. <3 <3 <3

3. Which do you like better: knitting or crocheting?
Yes! :D I used to think that crocheting was easier, but now that I'm a better knitter I'm much more satisfied with knit garments. Crochet is good for sturdy stuff and baby blankets, I guess, since I usually crochet those.

4. What is your favorite genre/style to write?
Adventure/fantasy/fairy tale-ish with a dab of steampunk. I think that covers all my bases. ;)) Some days I wish I could do slice-of-life, but then I read something by someone who is very good at it and I realize that my mind just doesn't see the things I would need to see to write it convincingly.

5. If you could replace a character in CON who would you choose to be?
Lucy, I think. Of course, if someone else dropped me into the stories, I'd probably end up as Puzzle.

Adeona asked:
1: What sort of tea is your favorite?
I am a not-very-informed drinker of tea. I think it's green tea. But I usually drink some sort of Celestial Seasonings blend. For awhile I was drinking their Christmas/Nutcracker blend and it was good. I also like their mint tea.

2: Do you drink it from a teacup or a mug?
A mug. I do own a teacup, but that's as far as that goes.

3: What is one of your favorite words?
Defenestrate. Which is a popular weird word, I think, because I run across it from time to time in collections of unusual words or authors showing off the depths of their vocabulary (I only remember one of those authors, but I'm sure I've seen it other times and giggled?). It means to throw someone out a window.

4:How do you spell gray/grey?
I default to grey. However, in my head, they mean slightly different shades: grey is sort of silvery, like a Lothlorien cloak and gray is darker like an elephant or a storm cloud.

5: What is one of your favorite Bible verses?
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of Heavenly Lights who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17
meltintall3: (Default)
"Sorry….Do you find it easy to get drunk on words?"
"So easy that, to tell you the truth, I am seldom perfectly sober. Which accounts for my talking so much."—Gaudy Night by Dorothy Sayers

37,300

Borrowed with glee from Pepper Darcy

1. GREED What is your most expensive book? What is your least expensive book?

Um. Err. Hmmm. Off the top of my head I'd say probably one of my sewing books (Tudor Tailor; Patterns of Fashion, Art of Manipulating Fabric etc) or The Art of the Fellowship of the Ring/Two Towers is the most expensive. If I rounded out that set, it'd be that one for sure but I haven't really paid attention to price... As for least expensive, well, I've picked up a fair number of ten cent bargin paperbacks...

2. WRATH—What author do you have a love/hate relationship with?

K. M. Peyton, perhaps. Every book after the first one I read has not sat right with me, and yet I keep picking them up because they sound interesting and they're highly praised in the pony book world...

3. GLUTTONY—What book have you deliciously devoured over and over with no shame whatsoever?

Operation Knapsack, Jane of Lantern Hill and LadyCake Farm. They're comfort reads of the highest order.

4. SLOTH—What book have you neglected reading due to laziness?

Crime and Punishment; Moby Dick; Hour of Gold, Hour of Lead...

5. PRIDE—What book do you most talk about in order to sound like a very intellectual reader?

Ah-hem. *clears throat* When I was eleven, I read Anna Karenina for the first time. I've also read Les Miserables and War and Peace. It seems like that's some sort of accomplishment... (Once you get the rhyme and reason of the names, Tolstoy is actually very enjoyable. Really! I've read Anna Karenina three times now.) (You see how intellectual I am. XD )

6. ADMIRATION—What attributes do you find most attractive in male or female characters?

I... have a weakness for the mysterious, snarky characters who manage to tick everyone else off to some extent and yet are masters of their craft and also dangerous to cross. That confession out of the way, I love characters who are brave, honest, steadfast and have a good sense of humour.

7. ENVY—What books would you most like to receive as a gift?

At the moment... I think I'd like a copy of The Napoleon of Notting Hill (in English) with the Japanese cover, a complete set of Ranger's Apprentice with the new Australian covers, the fifth Attolia book, Entwined, ... and a Arts and Crafts era bookshelf. Oh, and a complete set of FullMetal Alchemist wouldn't go amiss, either.

8. Is there a book in your collection you are ashamed of?

Piper at the Gate by Mary Stanton. Not really, though. It was better than I thought it would be and it was fifty cents anyway.

9. What 5 books would accompany you to a desert island ( no 5 series, actual single books)

(Cruelty to be circumvented if at all possible!)

The Bible
Lord of the Rings (I'm getting an edition that includes The Hobbit and The Silmarillion and hopefuly Unfinished Tales and Lost Tales I and II. I'm not asking for a lot here, folks!)
Ladycake Farm
Oxford Book of Famous Poems
or something of that ilk
Mysterious Island (because I want it to be an island like Lincoln Island and I can't remember all the details!)

10. What books are you going to read next and why?

Well, Fallon because it's been awhile; The Call of the Lapwing because it's more or less the right era and flavor I want to invoke in this year's NaNo novel despite being not all that great a story, and Growing Pains by Wanda Gág because it's a selection from her diaries and that sounds interesting...

11. What is the first book you remember from childhood?

It's a book of nursery rhymes

12. Do you owe an e-reader?/ would you like one?

I have my laptop and visit Project Gutenburg and Google Books with some frequency

13. A book that truly changed your life:

The Bible. I wouldn't be who I am without it, or if I'd never read it

14. A book you hated to read:

Hate is a strong word, and I guess I haven't felt that particular emotion about a book recently enough for it to make a strong impression. Blue Roan Child and Skycarver both left nasty after-tastes, but I didn't hate them, I just disagreed with the author's world view

15. A book you would recommend to me:

You, being the reader of this meme? Do you expect me to be a mind reader? Or is you I the writer?

I is a letter you see with your eye.

Can U mean you, or is it just I?

Ask me a riddle and I’ll tell you why.
--from
Triss by Brian Jacques

Word association to the rescue! I recommend Marlfox or Mariel of Redwall by Brian Jacques. I just finished Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time by Dava Sobel and it was fascinating. Go read that one too!

You Are A Thoughtful Idealist

You have no problem diving into new experiences. You're so brave that you don't even notice how courageous you are.

You like to think that people see you as intellectual and wise. You consider yourself to be very smart.

You are a very romantic person. You can't help but see the world as it should be.

Right now, you feel like the whole world is open to you. You see lots of possibilities.

Overall, your life is very peaceful - if not a little solitary. Much of what goes on goes on in your head.

You aren't optimistic about the future. You worry about what will happen to the world and if we'll be able to clean up the messes we've made.

Which Diana Wynne Jones Character Are You?

I am Princess Beatrice from Castle in the Air. I was pleased by this result. I remember her as being staunchly practical and tweed-wearing. :D

Royai earrings

...Those are going on my wishlist (or to-make next time I have clips and Sculpey), near the Hardy Boy book earrings... There ought to be Narnia or Middle Earth (Or Myst--how cool could that be?!) earrings in this list to better represent my fandoms, but I can't think of any that I've seen that I really liked.

EDIT: Speaking of Attolia...

Atlas of True Names

I have no words for how cool this is; you'll just have to see it for yourself. Maps + names = AMAZING.

Comics I quite like: ...and because it doesn't feel quite right to have only two three (I keep adding more...) links, a meme as well: Rules
  1. Put your music player on Shuffle.
  2. For each question, press the next button for your answer
  3. You must write that song name down, no matter how silly it sounds.
IF SOMEONE ASKS "IS THIS OKAY?" YOU SAY: "Leit af Lifi" by Sigur Ros -- and nobody would know what I meant, even me :p HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF? "American Collection Theme" by Yo Yo Ma WHAT DO YOU LIKE IN A GUY/GIRL? "Eragon" by Patrick Doyle -- excuse me while I go die of embarrassment... I did write a derivative work based on this piece, but... HOW DO YOU FEEL TODAY? "Only Time" by Enya as performed by Robin Berry WHAT IS YOUR LIFE'S PURPOSE? "Laetatus sum, gradual in mode 7 (Liber Usualis No. 560, GR 139)" by the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos -- which would be Latin for 'to be rejoicing' (if my translation is accurate); which is, if you stretch the point, praising God WHAT IS YOUR MOTTO? "The Leprechan's Jig" by Robin Berry WHAT DO YOUR FRIENDS THINK OF YOU? "If I Loved You" by Charlotte Church -- uh-huh... WHAT DO YOUR PARENTS THINK OF YOU? "Memoirs of a Geisha: As the Water" by John Williams WHAT DO YOU OFTEN THINK ABOUT? "No One Cared: Opening Credits" by Louisa Sharp WHAT IS 2+2? "Linda Cholita" by Viento Andino WHAT DO YOU THINK OF YOUR BEST FRIEND? "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian: The Door in the Air" by Harry Gregson-Williams WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE PERSON YOU LIKE? "Phillipians 3:12-21" as read by my Mom WHAT IS YOUR LIFE STORY? "Queen of Attolia: Chapter 10" as read by myself -- "How inconspicuous I will be when next I am in Attolia dressed in Eddisan formalwear with gold frogs down the front" WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP? "Boadicea" by Enya WHAT DO YOU THINK WHEN YOU SEE THE PERSON YOU LIKE? "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian: The Duel" by Harry Gregson-Williams WHAT WILL YOU DANCE TO AT YOUR WEDDING? "First Snow" by Various Artists -- It's a piano piece, and I can't find any more info about it; but it'll be a slow dance, I guess :) WHAT WILL THEY PLAY AT YOUR FUNERAL? "Media vita in morte sumus, responsory in mode 4" by the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST FEAR? "Unshakeable Kingdom" by Chiz Ryder WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST SECRET? "Nutcracker Suite Overture" by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky WHAT DO YOU THINK OF YOUR FRIENDS? "Occuli omnium, gradual in mode 7" by the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos WHAT IS YOUR NICKNAME? "To Go Beyond, Pt. 1" by Enya -- Some of these answers are positively unhelpful... and with several multiples from different albums it's like the randomizer isn't going very deep at all HOW WILL YOU NAME THIS POST? "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian: The Raid on the Castle" by Harry Gregson-Williams

A new manner of fashion I'd found,
And the world seemed to smile all around.
'Til it wilted, I wore it,
I'll always adore it,
My sweet little Alice blue gown!

lyric by Joseph McCarthy and Harry Tierney

you are lightcyan
#E0FFFF

Your dominant hues are green and blue. You're smart and you know it, and want to use your power to help people and relate to others. Even though you tend to battle with yourself, you solve other people's conflicts well.

Your saturation level is very low - you have better things to do than jump headfirst into every little project. You make sure your actions are going to really accomplish something before you start because you hate wasting energy making everyone else think you're working.

Your outlook on life is very bright. You are sunny and optimistic about life and others find it very encouraging, but remember to tone it down if you sense irritation.

Now with a new, improved set of rules! :p

1. You must post these rules (very, VERY Important )
2. Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post, and create ten new questions for the people you tag to answer.

1. You're in a dire situation. Would you rather have the Tenth or the Eleventh doctor appear? *flips coin* Heads, the Tenth. Tails, the Eleventh. *watches coin spin* Iiiiinteresssssting.
2. Would you rather live with Robin Hood in the woods, or with the Star Trek gang on the Enterprise? Robin Hood, oh yeah!!!
3. Would you rather be a famous author, or a famous actor? Famous author. There seems to be less peril involved in sitting at a desk and writing.
4. Your book/poem/song/story is being turned into a movie. Who would you get to play the main actor/actress? ...Skandar Keynes...
5. What if there was only one book (Bible excluded) that you could read for the rest of your life? What would it be? Well, I'd try for a 2000+ page anthology created by my new favorite editor, myself, of course. Available only in a limited edition, it'd have the complete works of Tolkien, Megan Whalen Turner, Elizabeth Marie Pope, A. A. Milne, and the poems of A. B. Banjo Paterson. If they pried that out of my fingers, I suppose Three Men in a Boat would have to do.
6. What are your five current favorite songs?
Underfloor by Patrick Doyle
Lothlorien by Enya
Now and for Always from the LotR musical
O Holy Night by Josh Groban
Blessings by Laura Story
7. You're stuck at home all day. What would you do? Ignore my to-do list, for sure!
8. If you had to marry an actor, who would it be? Someone who can recite poetry and has a voice to die for...
9. It's midnight. You hear a knock on the door. You look through the peephole and standing outside is…?My sister! She got locked out while checking on the animals, I guess? She's a little upset that it took this long for me to notice...
10. You are going to war, but you can only pick one weapon. What would it be?A lightsaber.

And the questions...

1. Would you rather live at Pemberley or Green Gables?
2. Forest or plains?
3. What is your dream vehicle?
4. If you could be part of a TV show, which one would you pick and why?
5. Describe your favorite dessert!
6. Robin Hood or King Richard?
7. Arthur or Merlin?
8. Would you rather give a speech or sing a song in front of a crowd?
9. How do you cure hiccups?
10. Mountains or seaside?

1.You must post these rules.
2.Each person must post 11 things about themselves in their journal.
3.Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post, and create eleven new questions for the people you tag to answer.
4.You have to choose 11 people to tag and post their icons on your journal.
5.Go to their page and tell them you have tagged him/her.
6.No tag backs.
7.No stuff in the tagging section about "you are tagged if you are reading this." You legitimately (AKA, really, truly, with all honesty) have to tag 11 people
--that sound? Oh, that might just be me laughing at how desperate the poor iddle memes are getting...

1. what's your favourite band and what's your absolute favourite song from them? Band? Do I listen to bands? Uhhhh... uh... ABBA? And Cassandra

2. would you die for the person you loved most in the world? I expect I'd whinge about it a bit, but I'd like to think I would

3. what makes a hero... a REAL hero in your eyes? I think I'm going to try and answer that with this quote by Howard Pyle from The Champions of the Round Table:
  • For so it was with those noble gallant knights of those days; that whilst they would perform signal service for mankind, yet they were not pleased to receive thanks or reward for the same, but took utmost satisfaction, not in what they gained by their acts, but in the doing of knightly deed, for they found all their reward in their deeds, because that thereby they made the world in which they lived better; and because they made the glory of the King, whose servants they were, the more glorious.
Speaking of NaNo (since it's November), way back in 2008 I wrote out a conversation about heroes and what they are. But that's kind of long, and even that falls short of describing what exactly I think a hero is. Available on request, shall we say?

4. would you marry someone even if they weren't attractive but had a beautiful/sweet/kind/noble/honourable personality? Yes!

5. what is the saddest thing in the world to you? The saddest thing is that there are people who deliberately turn their backs on God

6. do you like to read stories? *staggers under a load of books* Oh, yes!

7. Are you a part of MasterRohan's Quest? No. I am a... stranger on the street who keeps seeing the Quest go by, and who thinks that y'all are having a good time

8. why do you bother with my art? I 'bother with your art', Pepper, because you create things of beauty, pictures that express the good, and true, and pure, and exuberant and that inspires me.

9. have you ever watched The Lord of the Rings the Extended Versions back to back in one day? Alack, alas, and lackaday! I have not. *hides card for membership in the LotR crazy fan club so that those who have cannot take it away* I'm a good fan! HONEST!!!

10. is telling a lie for a good end justifiable or wrong? I think I *could* justify it to myself, but... I'm not sure I *should*

11. do you believe in absolute truth, right or wrong, good and evil, black and white? Yes!

On to the questions!

1. What is your favorite season?
2. Peanut butter or jelly?
3. Is there a song that means something to you? What is it?
4. Can you recite your favorite poem?
5. Is there a job you wouldn't do, even if it was your only chance of getting a job?
6. Groundhogs or gophers?
7. Do you like coffee tables?
8. Do coffee tables like you?
9. What is the funniest book you've ever read?
10. Can you tell a joke or carry a tune in a bucket?
11. East or west?

I tag [livejournal.com profile] valiantarcher[livejournal.com profile] ladyadeone[livejournal.com profile] wunderkind_lucy and my mom. (Hi, mom!) And if you're not lucky enough to be on this list, but you have a burning desire to answer this particular set of questions? You can do it too.

Stand forth distinguished from the circling crowd )

I can't believe it's taken me this long to come up with five 'R' characters. I would have thought them a bit more common than this...
meltintall3: (Default)
1. Reply to this post and I'll assign you a letter.
2. List (and upload) 5-10 songs you love that begin with that letter.
3. Post them to your journal with these instructions.
