I've been bitten by the... well, not exactly bookmaking bug because an actual bug implies I have a project in mind, but the desire to dig out the diagrams and whatnot and finally learn about imposition (that's when you take your 1,2,3,4 etc. pages and rearrange them to print in signatures--and can you imagine setting up anything larger than about 8 pages manually?).

And that's my handy reference guide, tailored between what I already know and what I need to know next time I try making a book or two.

Names

  • The Dictionary of Medieval Names from European Sources aims to document all given names recorded in European sources written between 600 and 1600.

  • Medieval Names Archive, which contains a really wide number of other links, directing to various lists of names from many regions of Europe and the rest of the world

  • Lucifer’s Onomastikon: It has names for all the continents and a number of countries for each continent, you can pick the age (it can be Medieval, but also “ancient”, or others) and the geographic source

Aloe Vera

10-13 aloe

First, you have to water your plant so that it's happy and productive. Otherwise you have spindly, flat, leaves and you'll wonder just how much work goes into harvesting aloe vera gel! So after the plant has enjoyed a rainy season (because really, the only reason my plant lives at all is because its cactus and doesn't need water regularly...) you can pick off a few of the lower leaves and cut or peel them open to reveal a white goo.

I used a spoon and ended up just scraping the insides out onto the cutting board and then draining it into the container. The first leaf went extra well and I got nice clear gel scooped out. Then I started getting little specks of green from scraping the leaf which gave the whole thing a green tint.

I'd say it took me an hour to go through seven leaves, and I wound up with a quarter cup of watery gel to stick in the fridge. The fragments haven't done it much good, so I probably should have strained it too, and somehow mixed the gel and the not-so-gel together better...

It's supposed to be a good moisturizer. Commercial gel is good for sunburns.

And that, my friends, is what I know about aloe vera. :p

So, in the 'I-have-too-many-projects-anyway-what's-one-more' category:

I picked up a man's suit coat at the thrift store yesterday and with any luck at all I can modify it to look like that... Of course, it could just be a spectacular fail but it never hurts to try...

And in the 'Huh-that's-super-cool-maybe-someday-I-could-try-that' category:

Also, since the first try at knitting the Mary Margaret Beret failed spectacularly (I begin to suspect it cannot be knit in the round, but I'm going to give it another go with a larger needle size) I ripped it out. I haven't started anything for my doll, either.

Somehow, deadlines always help in getting stuff done. The end of the year and being able to use the completed: 2012 tag on this project since all I had left was little stuff turned out to be just enough. I freehanded my initials and the year after cutting the slit down the middle. It wasn't the most efficient way of doing them, but I didn't know how much to allow for binding the slit so they had to be added afterward.

I'd say it's about 88% hand-work; the bias tape is sewn together and the inside of the seams are done by machine.

Do you know what I am thinking about now? You have three guesses, and I bet all of them will be right.

I am sad I didn't get right on creating a set of hobbits for Hobbit day because it just so happened that I actually went to part of an actual event.

Also, a Hobbit limerick for your amusement and someday I will end up caving to Tumblr...

I am Princess Beatrice from Castle in the Air. I was pleased by this result. I remember her as being staunchly practical and tweed-wearing. :D

Royai earrings

...Those are going on my wishlist (or to-make next time I have clips and Sculpey), near the Hardy Boy book earrings... There ought to be Narnia or Middle Earth (Or Myst--how cool could that be?!) earrings in this list to better represent my fandoms, but I can't think of any that I've seen that I really liked.

EDIT: Speaking of Attolia...

I have no words for how cool this is; you'll just have to see it for yourself. Maps + names = AMAZING.

I'm still working on the Mary Margaret beret. The pattern is almost finished, I've got two more rows? Depending on how I count? Then a few rounds of eyelet, and then some mindless knitting, then then decreases. But so far, despite stitch markers I keep having to rip out three or four rows of for one of the ten repeats because the 14 stitches have either multiplied or decreased while I was not paying attention. XD

In other news, this is taking almost as long as a baby afghan. I've bought the yarn for that sweater pattern I keep nattering on about (beautiful copper stuff!) and I'm being to wonder if I bit off a bit more than I'm willing to chew, since this hat is done on the same size needles and it's making me cross-eyed.

Not that that's stopped me from falling in love with another, similarly patterned sweater... http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/agatha-6

Another question is, would I wear a belt like this?

Finally, how fantastic are these book wrappers?!!!

I've started thinking about recreating this beret, because I've been smitten with it ever since it first showed up. After the rows of ribbing there's a leaf pattern, so I did a Google image search on knit leaf lace... which may or may not have been a mistake. :p

Moving on to observations on the beret...

narrow ribbing
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/leaf-lace-washcloth - useful for charting the leaf part of the design
http://laceknitter.blogspot.com/2009/07/29-smyrna-lace.html - useful for charting the second part of the
design?
http://laceknitter.blogspot.com/2009/05/18-double-diamond.html - possibly this might be closer?
http://laceknitter.blogspot.com/2009/07/27-rose-leaf-lace.html - then we have three/five rows of eyelets, depending on whether or not there's an offset
knit
some sort of pattern in the decreases
another row of eyelet
more pattern in the decreases

There has been a distinct lack of snow this winter. *sad face* However, I just ran across a very interesting idea, should I ever be able to decide what exactly I'm going to do with it...
In the related ideas category... well, I found it via the same image search...

They say you learn something new every day. Well, this is certainly one of the most interesting things I've come across recently.

It started with a fan version of an incomplete song.

Perilous Gard: the song

Which was neat, but then the music for it was written in ABC notation and, forgive me for the verbal flailing, but that's so cool! Why haven't I heard about this before?!

Finally, here's a converter to take the text to the traditional sheet format. :D

I'm writing a book. I've got the page numbers done. --Steven Wright

Yay for pre-NaNo prep!

What's in a name?

Ahhhh, that's why some books are so disappointing -- my brain created a cooler story than the author delivered. So far, I doubt my titles raise unfulfilled expectations, they are quite mundane and placeholderish.

It tells me that I write in a passive voice and since it is only a minion it gets away without harm. Or if not, no one notices. One minion is much like another, after all. It is probably the coolest thing since Write or Die but I hadn't heard of it until recently.

For Christmas, my sister gave me some yarn she spun herself. I think the fiber is from one of our llamas, but it might be from a random bag of sheep wool. I decided I'd make another beret with it, because the first one went so well. I'm a poor judge of how much yarn a project might take, because I haven't completed the cable motif (I stole the pattern from a sock book my sister received!) and I only have enough yarn left to do another round or so. Hat fail.

I've been promised more yarn, but I expect it'll be another Christmas before this project is finished. So I don't forget in the interim, it's taken me about eight hours to get this far. And that's with learning how to do cables and reading a knitting chart and making a few counting mistakes along the way.

Anyway, when the hat gets finished, I think it would look lovely with a sweater from this pattern. It always looks so cute when Solanah of Vixen Vintage wears hers. I'd need a slightly lighter-weight yarn, the gage for the sweater (8 sts = 1 in.) is double the gage I have in the beret.
