I need to get this firmly ingrained in my brain before I make a truly awful mistake... If there's a difference in feel depending on how I rub the fabric, there WILL be a difference in fabric color if the pieces don't all go the same way!

I'm not sure how many times I've done this... laid out a pattern neatly on the fabric with as little wastage as possible, cut out the pieces, started sewing, and then laid the project out on the floor for some reason. Only then do I discover that there is a noticeable difference in how the light hits the fabric! Oops!

I have a skirt in two different shades of black made from the same fabric. I also tend to cut velvets so that if you run your hand down the finished project, it feels rough. This is probably a related problem...

Anyway, I had this idea that I'd make myself a cute vest that looks like the vest and corset from Eowyn's Shieldmaiden outfit. I drafted the pattern, did a muslin or two, and cut and sewed the lining. Then I pulled out the brown corduroy I planned on using for the fashion fabric and cut the pieces to fit the lining. Alas, I cut it with the nap running in opposite directions for the front and back and it showed when I pinned the side seam.

Fortunately for me, I had enough fabric to cut out another entire vest, this time matching the front with the new back and the old back with a new front.

So now I'm going to have two very similar brown vests... and since I don't have gold trim to make it look like Eowyn's vest, I'm making up a blue trim version.

The lace is crocheted by myself from a House of White Birches antique pattern reproduction. I hope to have enough thread left on the ball to make a thin strip of lace for the neckline.

I make mistakes like that all the time. I've been luck so far that I've caught myself before cutting.
As for the velvet, when you cut it w/the nap running up, it looks richer. So that's a good thing, right!

I love the lace! I've never been able to get the hang of crochet or knitting, and always love to see what others can do!

The rich look may explain why I end up cutting what feels like upside down, then. Ha! I knew there must be a reason! lol
