word of the day: phosphene

http://www.merriam-webster.com/word-of-the-day

Allan rubbed his eyes, which had felt tired. The pressure of his cold fingertips was a pleasant relief and the dancing phosphemes a familiar distraction. He stretched an arm along the back of the bench, and stared back up at the monolith. As quiet returned to the area after the snowball fight, his eyes slowly unfocused. That was when he noticed the hairline crack and sat up straight again, interest of fire. "Is that a door?"
"It is!" said Nijal, delighted. He poked and prodded and pried until the catch gave and the door in the man-shape's leg came open.

Ooh. This isn't the monolith, is it? ;))

Is it "phosphene" or "phospheme"? Either way, it's neat; I didn't know what the word for that was before. ;))

The very same. ;))

I... don't remember? I thought I copy-pasted but I might have typed it out wrong... *checks* It is "phosphene". :)

Ooh, how exciting! Is it a root cellar? :D ;)

Ah, okay! :) I was just asking because it's spelled with a "m" in the excerpt, and I wasn't sure if that was a different form or a typo...

...it had old potatoes, so yes? ;))

Opps. XD I will correct the text...

Yay for secret root cellars in unlikely places! :D ...Did they have to eat the potatoes? -_-

;)) Okay.

Not yet and it seems unlikely at this point. ;))

Too bad! Though I'm sure they wouldn't taste the best, at least it would be an useful detail. ;)

Great job working such an odd word seamlessly into the narrative. *thumbs up*
And it sounds better spelled with an M. :P

I was remembering a book I read ages ago where the hero finds a secret door in an idol which leads to a tiny chamber for someone to hide in and speak out its mouth...

Oh, yay!
Heh. Well. It certainly made more sense to my fingers. :p

I'm pretty sure I've read a book like that too. I think it was set in ancient Egypt.

The Cat of Bubastes, maybe?

...That could be! I haven't read that in years, unlike Shadow Hawk or Golden Goblet...

The Golden Goblet was one of my favorites for a long time. I need to reread it. Shadow Hawk I only read comparitively recently and don't recall too much about it. Though I do recall it gives a completely reversed POV on tomb robbery from the other!
