Hugh thought there were a great many dull speeches to open the session. Some were invocations of justice and honest dealings, which he would have appreciated more if he'd thought they carried any weight and were not included solely for the sake of tradition and pomp. Others were paeans to the accomplishments of those assembled, meant to ease crabwise into the day's business.
