There was a piebald standing in the paddock, but it had no wings. "We can take mine," I said. "She'll be faster—we live far up Kalivi, you know."

Doctor Arrens blinked at me, taking in the leather jacket I wore despite the warmth of the day, and the cap with its rabbit fur that I'd shoved down to dangle from my neck. It occurred to me that he might refuse to come, and the air was suddenly gravid with anticipation. I moistened my lips to try and explain that it would be perfectly safe, but the doctor suddenly nodded. "All right."

I wanted to know if I should scold or comfort, and now that he was awake again I was leaning towards scolding Karl for the fright I'd received.

No—not a stranger, then, I thought as I saw the man's face. He reminded me of my own father, gone these several years, and I pulled out a name: Uncle Alaric Auberg. I had a dim notion that Uncle Alaric lived in Delchin, moving in the upper echelon of society. Looking at the fine cloth and cut of Uncle Alaric's jacket, I had no doubt that he was a person of some importance.

Flying horses are renowned for their speed. They need no roads, and are not constrained by geography. However, the wings of the yearlings and foals would not support them for more than short bursts, so we were all earthbound. With Karl and Sunrider in the lead, Uncle Alaric on Snowmane to watch for stragglers, and I on the lead mare in the middle the three of us and the herd made a mixed cavalcade down Kalivi's southern side.

(ERR... WELL... now that I think about it, should you ever run across characters called the Blind King and Drowned Prince you miiiiiiight want to start checking IDs. XD Also, I pulled up one of the old stories featuring the folk hero and heroine and ON THE VERY FIRST PAGE we are introduced to a previously unknown twin aunt. XD (I was pretty sure I had written about the house in it somewhere but I was distracted by how melodramatic the opening was, and then I flipped to the end and found a large section that I only vaguely remember writing, but which was clearly setting up Shenanigans.) I guess there's just no escaping it. :P ;)) )
