Merriam Webster word of the day: gravid

"Are you the doctor?" I blurted, and then continued. "It's my brother. He's broken his leg, and I don't know how to set it straight."

"Let me fetch my bag," he said. "Can you saddle my horse?"

There was a piebald standing in the paddock, but it had no wings. "We can take mine," I said. "She'll be faster—we live far up Kalivi, you know."

Doctor Arrens blinked at me, taking in the leather jacket I wore despite the warmth of the day, and the cap with its rabbit fur that I'd shoved down to dangle from my neck. It occurred to me that he might refuse to come, and the air was suddenly gravid with anticipation. I moistened my lips to try and explain that it would be perfectly safe, but the doctor suddenly nodded. "All right."

Merriam Webster word of the day: temerarious

"What happened?" I asked. What temerarious activity had my brother been engaged in before his accident? Was it a simple slip of the foot? Had some well-known path given way? I wanted to know if I should scold or comfort, and now that he was awake again I was leaning towards scolding Karl for the fright I'd received.

Merriam Webster word of the day: echelon

No—not a stranger, then, I thought as I saw the man's face. He reminded me of my own father, gone these several years, and I pulled out a name: Uncle Alaric Auberg. I had a dim notion that Uncle Alaric lived in Delchin, moving in the upper echelon of society. Looking at the fine cloth and cut of Uncle Alaric's jacket, I had no doubt that he was a person of some importance.

Merriam Webster word of the day: dicker

A newlywed couple took our goats, and I supposed the coins the young man pressed into my hand were as fair a price as I could ask. I didn't have the heart to dicker with him, not when he was bursting with enthusiasm for fresh milk and cheese of their own and eager to show his bride their new livestock.

Merriam Webster word of the day: cavalcade

Flying horses are renowned for their speed. They need no roads, and are not constrained by geography. However, the wings of the yearlings and foals would not support them for more than short bursts, so we were all earthbound. With Karl and Sunrider in the lead, Uncle Alaric on Snowmane to watch for stragglers, and I on the lead mare in the middle the three of us and the herd made a mixed cavalcade down Kalivi's southern side.

Merriam Webster word of the day: mollify

"I edged closer," said the soldier. "I'd only a bit of bread left--barely enough to be a morsel in the dog's mouth--but I offered it. The snarl continued, but the dog lowered its head and I could feel its hot breath on my hand. But the food was enough to mollify it, and I was able to pass in safety. Beyond the dog was the room."

Nov. 4: Aww! :D

Nov. 5: So they're walking all the horses down south? Does this Uncle Alaric have room for all them?

...it happened ONCE (that I'm acknowledging at this point in time). :P

Nov. 5: Yup! Thrilling stuff! :P Uncle Alaric has a large stable and a house that can also be used in a pinch (very, very thrilling)

...yes, but it was very major (WAIT. WHERE ELSE?????). :P ;))

(ERR... WELL... now that I think about it, should you ever run across characters called the Blind King and Drowned Prince you miiiiiiight want to start checking IDs. XD Also, I pulled up one of the old stories featuring the folk hero and heroine and ON THE VERY FIRST PAGE we are introduced to a previously unknown twin aunt. XD (I was pretty sure I had written about the house in it somewhere but I was distracted by how melodramatic the opening was, and then I flipped to the end and found a large section that I only vaguely remember writing, but which was clearly setting up Shenanigans.) I guess there's just no escaping it. :P ;)) )

(!!! OH MY. ;)) This is gonna be a hallmark of yours, "Counterfeit Relatives". ;)) Not to mention the other disappearing aunt and uncle of Harold's. ;)) (Nice. ;)) ) Nope, no escaping... But now I am forewarned. ;) )

OOOH! Sounds like the story of the soldier with the princess and the dogs with the eyes the size of dinner plates... The Soldier and the Tinderbox? Congrats on being almost to 10K! :D

(Ooooooh, now I feel special; my predilection even has a shiny trope name and everything. ;)) :) )

Yes indeedy! :D I'm enjoying the soldier very much while he's travelling with our main characters. :)

(Don't get too excited, I just made it up. ;)) I'm sure there's a variant trope listing on TVTropes but I'm not going there right now. XD ;)) )

Yay! :D Does the soldier get a happy end? ;))

Nice icon, by the way. Very appropriate. ;))

(Well, it sounds good to me, so I'm going to take it and be happy. ;)) )
